Blepharitis eyes are a non-contagious irritation and inflammation of the eyelids that generally is concentrated at the base of the lid where the eyelashes meet the eyelid. This common eye condition is typically brought on by excess excretion of oil in the glands near the eyelid (otherwise known as the meibomian glands) and this leads to the growth of bacteria on the eyelids. This disease can also be caused by re-occurring styes, chalazia (resulting from blockage of the eyelid glands), or hordeolum (or inflammation of the sebaceous gland of the eyelid).
People of all ages are affected by this disease, however, it is more commonly found in older patients.
This controllable disease is difficult to contain however, it doesn’t typically cause a change of vision or damage to the eye. If the disease has been left untreated, it can progress to a more serious condition referred to as, Ulcerative Blepharitis. Bacteria is the common cause of the Ulcerative form of this disease and the symptoms can include missing eyelashes, scarring of the eyelid, occasional blurred vision, and possibly the most serious symptom is cornea inflammation.
This disease can be diagnosed properly by receiving a routine eye examination, including a complete inspection of the eyelids and eyelashes. A slit lamp microscope can be used to closer examine the eye with the use of magnification in an effort to properly diagnose the condition.
Proper treatment of this condition requires thorough cleaning of the eyes, face, and scalp. Regular hygiene is a great way to prevent as well as, treat this eye condition from progressing any further. Other methods that are commonly used for treatment of this condition include applying a warm compress to each eye for at least two or three, five-minute intervals to relieve itching and burning as well as to keep the eyes moist and prevent excess oil from forming. Blepharitis eye drops may be administered in the form of steroid eye drops and these may be used for a short time. Restasis eye drops contain castor oil and make great Blepharitis eye drops, as well. Gently washing the eyelids is another part of the hygiene regimen that is a viable option for the treatment of this condition. Massaging the eyelids is a great method of treatment of this condition and is best, if done after applying a compress.
